When to Start Pashupati Vrat?

 

Pashupati Vrat can be commenced on any Monday, regardless of the lunar phase (Krishna Paksha or Shukla Paksha). The most crucial requirement is that the vrat begins on a Monday.

Duration of the Vrat

Number of Mondays: The vrat is traditionally observed for five consecutive Mondays. Many devotees witness their wishes fulfilled even before completing all five Mondays. If your desire is already met and you wish to continue, you may skip one Monday and then resume.

How to Perform Pashupati Vrat

  • Preparation on the First Monday: Take a ritualistic bath and wear clean clothes. Pledge to observe the vrat for five Mondays. Visit the nearest Shivalaya with a worship plate containing incense, lamps, sandalwood, vilva patra, flowers, fruits, and water. Offer Abhishekam to Bhagwan Shiva.
  • Evening Rituals (Pradosh Kaal): In the evening, cleanse yourself again before heading to the temple. Take sweet prasad and six ghee lamps. Divide the prasad into three parts, offering two to Bhagwan Shiva and keeping one part for yourself. Light five of the six lamps in front of Bhagwan Shiva and bring the remaining lamp home. Place and light it at your house’s main entrance, on the right side of the threshold.
  • Consuming Prasad: Take a portion of the prasad you kept for yourself, ensuring you do not share it with others. You may consume food, but it is recommended to eat only sweets.

Important Rules of Pashupati Vrat

  • Duration of the Vrat: The Pashupati Vrat is to be observed for five consecutive Mondays.
  • Location of Worship: The puja for the Pashupati Vrat must be conducted in a Shiva temple. Worshipping in a Shiva temple is essential for this vrat.
  • Consistency in Worship Location: The first Monday’s puja should be done in a specific Shiva temple, and it is necessary to perform the vrat in that same temple for all five Mondays. In other words, the entire Pashupati Vrat must be observed in one Shiva temple only.
  • In Case of Travel: If, due to unavoidable circumstances, you need to travel or go to a different place where reaching the same Shiva temple is not possible, you should postpone the vrat to the next Monday. However, it is important to continue the vrat in the same Shiva temple.
  • Frequency of Puja: The Pashupati Vrat involves worshipping the Shivling twice daily – once in the morning and once during the evening period known as Pradosh Kaal.
  • Diet During the Vrat: It is permissible to consume fruits (phalahar) during the day while observing the vrat.
  • Evening Meal: After the evening puja, a meal prepared with rock salt (sendha namak) and sattvic food can be consumed.

The Uddhapan (conclusion) of the vrat is conducted on the fifth Monday. Visit the temple during Pradosh Kaal, carrying a coconut wrapped in molly thread along with Bhog Prasad and lamps in your worship plate. Offer these to Bhagwan Shiva. If possible, decorate the deity with 108 bilva leaves or flowers. End your vrat with heartfelt devotion and donate as per your capacity.
